The History of Jaques - London

Simply Sports carry large stocks of sports equipment manufactured in London, England by Jaques.

Although well known for many sporting pastimes, Jaques are most famously associated with the games of Table Tennis and Croquet, originated by them 100 and 150 years ago respectively and now played as major sports worldwide. Table Tennis is indeed now recognised as an Olympic event.

John Jaques II won a place in sporting history - and a gold medal - for introducing croquet into England at the great exhibition in 1851. His display there attracted such wide attention that the game speedily became the vogue, not only here but in in Europe and throughout the British Empire. Several firms began making croquet equipment, but only John Jaques has survived from that period and continues to lead the market, offering superior equipment for all levels of play.

After setting up in business as wood, bone and ivory turners in 1795, John Jaques introduced their famous Staunton Chess in 1839, and this is now the standard chess design throughout the world and used for all major championships. Other "firsts" for Jaques were such favourites as Happy Families, Snap, Ludo, Halma, Counties of England, Snakes and Ladders etc, etc.

20 years ago Jaques introduced their revolutionary new Foldaroll Table Tennis table which is now standard equipment in most schools and leisure centres throughout Britain. This Web Site introduces a new advance on the famous Foldaroll design, a lighter weight tubular framed economy model, using space age thermo bonding - another Jaques first. Also new and sharing star billing, is the New Concept table, a low centre of gravity playback folding table with tubular steel underframe at a very competitive price. Ancillary equipment includes the new green label table tennis bat range with an excellent display stand.
