There has been a dramatic rise in the number of pools infected by Cryptosporidium.

There are now over 4,000 victims a year in England and Wales. 17 cases were recently connected with a swimming complex in Oxford which had to close for 2 weeks.

The national press are now exposing the problem and babies are thought to be the major cause.

The advise of the pool treatment advisory service (PWTAS) and more recently from Dr Gordon Nichols of the public health laboratory service is that babies should not go into a swimming pool without wearing "special trunks".

Increasingly swimming pool operators are insisting that all babies must wear special swim trunks before entering swimming pools.
